The Kittanning Firemen's Band uniform consists of the following:
  • Khaki long sleeve shirt and pants (Dickie's brand preferrably)
  • White helmet-liner, with leather strap
  • Pair of KFB patches
  • Red ascot
  • White gloves (Color Guard ONLY)
  • White "gun belt"
  • Pair of white leggings (a.k.a. "spats")
  • Pair of black patent leather shoes

The only uniform items not provided by the Kittanning Firemen's Band are the "khaki's" and the black high-shine shoes. Never changing, these are the hallmark of our uniform, reminiscent of World War II military uniform. The khaki's should be laundered often. Pants and shirts should be pressed and creased. It is suggested that a "military crease" be done on the shirts, which entails extra creases, in addition to the standard ones on the shirt-sleeves. Shoes should be buffed and polished to a high luster.

The white-painted helmet-liner is also taken from W.W.II uniform. In combat, a very heavy metal helmet shell was attached outside this liner. For our dress purposes, this implement is painted with white semi-gloss. Great care should be taken to keep the helmet-liner free of smudges, chips and scratches. For further decoration, a leather strap, three-eighth's-inch wide, is placed across the brim.

Our patch has changed slightly over the years, but it has always defined our organization's roots and who we represent. Once you get your shirt, it is up to you to sew on the patches. They are sewn, using white thread, two fingers' width, down from the shoulder on each sleeve.

Our Color Guard, in addition to all other uniform items, wears white cotton gloves. This enhances the visual aspect of their duties of precision drill.

The ascot adds a touch of color to the K.F.B. uniform. Worn correctly, it can be a fine addition to the uniform; when unkempt, an ascot can detract greatly from it. It is best to fold the top of your ascot over once before placing it around your neck. Keep it tucked, smartly, beneath the collar of your uniform.

Obviously, the K.F.B. does not carry firearms, however, we use gun belts as part of our uniform. The male part of the buckle is on the right, and the female on the left. A simple way to remember is to just say the phrase, "Buckle it right," and you'll get it every time.

Around the lower leg is worn the leggings. Over the years, the band has adopted a, perhaps, more generic title of "spats" to refer to these items. There are many methods of putting on leggings, but the most popular method is the "Shoe first, spat second" method: put your shoe on first; slip the spat over it; buckle the strap that goes under the sole of your shoe; and then lace it up the sides. Be careful to match the correct spat with the correct foot. To remember, use the phrase, "Brass out back," to remind yourself that the brass hooks should always face away from your leg, and backwards (towards the back of your leg). This method will insure placement in the proper direction, on the correct leg.

The Color Sergeant and Drum Major wear variations on the basic uniform, including white ascots, and gauntlets (gloves with wrist cuffs) for the Drum Major.

When the Kittanning Firemen's Band comes marching down the street, playing our "Street Beat" cadence, people always take notice. The first thing they see is that wall of khaki. The K.F.B. uniform has always been a point of tradition, for its members and its audiences, and it is very important that the uniform be worn properly, and with a great deal of pride.
