The Kittanning Firemen's Band is a volunteer group for men, ages fifteen and up. We
are not exclusively made up of firefighters; in fact, a majority of the membership
are not firemen. But we represent firefighters, and particularly the members of
Kittanning Hose Companies Nos. 1, 4 & 6.
Musically, we specialize in marches, but we pride ourselves in performing a variety
of music, from marches and patriotic tunes to ballads and big band swing. As various
as those styles may be, so are the music education and performance levels represented
by members of the band. No one should feel intimidated by the prospect of performing
with us: we do all we can to help all new members improve.
Marching is the other large component of what we do. Some might feel they are not
skilled enough in their marching, but we do our best to help everyone who wants to
succeed in our style of parade marching. There may also be some who feel physically
unable to march, but there are still many opportunities to play concert music with
us, and we welcome non-marching musicians.
The performance season generally runs from June through September, with rehearsals
commencing in April [See "Schedule" link, at left]. We realize that this is a
volunteer group and, as such, every person has many other commitments; all we ask
is that each member give of his time and talent, as much as he can. Commitment is
a very personal thing.
KFB supplies several items comprising its uniform: KFB patches, white helmet liner,
belt, spats, red ascot; and in most cases, black patent leather shoes (when available)
are provided. The only uniform items the individual musician is obligated to buy are
a pair of cotton pants and a long sleeve cotton work-shirt, both in khaki. Color guard
members, in addition to the khaki's, must also provide white gloves for uniform dress
[See "Uniform Info" link, at right].
KFB owns a limited number of larger instruments, such as tubas and percussion
equipment. Other musicians must provide their own instruments, music lyres, and
related paraphenalia. Additionally, flags, rifles, and the KFB banner are provided
for use by the color guard.
There are no fees or dues to belong, and conversely, members are not paid. This is
a completely volunteer organization, thriving on the support of the Kittanning Fire
Department, the community at large, and the individual KFB members' high level of
dedication.
